The Narrative
Coimbatore doesn't ask for your attention. It's a working city — Tamil Nadu's industrial backbone, full of textile mills and engineering workshops and people who wake up early and stay late. Most travellers pass through it on the way to Ooty or Munnar. I decided to stop and look.
The Isha Yoga Center sits at the foot of the Velliangiri Hills just outside the city. I spent a morning at the Dhyanalinga, a meditation space that holds no religious symbols — just space and silence and something in the air that makes it genuinely difficult to think about anything at all. A retired schoolteacher sitting beside me said he comes every Sunday. 'I don't understand what it is,' he said, 'but I feel better when I leave.'
The Singanallur Lake at dawn is Coimbatore's best-kept secret — a vast water body full of migratory birds where elderly Tamil couples do their morning walks and children chase egrets along the shore. A man named Chandran has been birdwatching here for thirty years. He listed the birds he'd seen that morning before I'd even introduced myself. This is a city of people who love what they love, quietly and persistently.
