Mist & Silence in Kodai

Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu

The Narrative

Kodaikanal exists in a perpetual soft-focus. The mist rolls in from the valleys every morning, wrapping the lake, the forests, and the small town in a silence that feels deliberate — as if the hills themselves are asking you to slow down. I arrived at dawn and didn't see the sun for three days. I didn't mind.

The Palani Hills hold secrets that most visitors walk right past. I spent two days with a local naturalist, Murugan, who led me into the shola forests — those ancient, stunted forests found only above 1,500 metres in South India. He showed me carnivorous pitcher plants growing wild from the rocks and told me that his father, and his father's father, had walked these same paths as guides.

I found the Paliyan people living at the forest edge — one of the oldest indigenous communities of Tamil Nadu. An elder named Selvi showed me how to identify medicinal plants by smell alone. She pressed a leaf between her fingers and held it to my nose. 'This one takes fever away,' she said. 'The forest has everything we need. We just have to remember how to ask.'
