Kathmandu, Nepal

The Narrative

Nepal is synonymous with 'Dal Bhat Power — 24 Hour.' You see it on t-shirts, on tea shop walls, on the faces of porters who carry loads that would break most of us. But I came to Nepal not for the trekking statistics, but for what happens around the dinner table.

In the winding alleys of Thamel and the quiet courtyards of Patan Durbar Square, I found a people whose smiles are as high as the peaks they live among. A family in Bhaktapur invited me into their home for a meal — three generations eating together off the same plate, the grandmother explaining through gestures and her granddaughter's translation that this is how they have always eaten.

The Boudhanath Stupa at dawn is one of the world's great quiet moments. Pilgrims circumambulate with prayer beads, monks chant from rooftop balconies, and the eyes of the Buddha watch from above in every direction. I sat for two hours and felt the world recalibrate.
