The Silence of Spiti

Spiti Valley, Himachal

The Narrative

Spiti is not a place you visit; it's a place you endure and eventually love. My journey began in Kaza, where the air is thin and the hospitality is thick. At 3,800 metres above sea level, every breath feels earned, and every meal tastes like a small victory against altitude.

I spent three days at Key Monastery, watching the sun hit the white-washed walls at golden hour. The monks shared stories of winter — months of complete isolation where the only sound is the wind carving through the Spiti River valley. They spoke of this isolation not as hardship, but as a gift: the gift of being fully present with what is.

The village of Hikkim holds the world's highest post office, and I found an old postmaster there who has been dispatching letters since 1983. He handed me a postcard of the valley and said, 'The mountains do not care who you are. That is why we come here.' I mailed it to myself. It arrived three weeks later, still carrying the scent of cold mountain air.
